I first taught The Journey of Me – An Adventure in Self Discovery as a workshop at the Whole Life Center in Federal Way, Washington. Thank you to those of you who attended. I had written a workbook for the course. To write the book I took a survey from people of all ages and asked them to give me three questions they had about life. I then took the questions that were repeated the most often and talked about my ideas of the answers in a workbook. That workbook ended up being my rough draft for An Adventure in Self Discovery – A Workbook for Self Expression. In addition to the essay content, the book has photos of my artwork and explanations of the intent of each painting. I also added exercises and journaling questions.

The art process in any form, whether it be educational or therapeutic is beneficial. I have been a therapeutic art educator for over 30 years. During those years, I have worked with people fro all walks of life. I have discovered that the act of creating can and does help people feel better.
From 1979 until 1989, I owned and operated the Hobbit School of Art. The program was initially started because the principal of the school where I worked as an aide gave my name to parents. I told her that I did not have teaching credentials, but she said that the art lessons that I provided to the children were very important and well needed. When the parents called I explained to them that I was not an art teacher. Their reply would invariably be "I'm not concerned about the art, it's what you've done for my child's personality and self-image. That's the reason I'll pay you whatever you ask." I started with five or six students, and in a very short time I had over 60 students a week. Doctors and therapists started sending me patients. I taught the terminally ill, handicapped, heart patients, geriatrics, suicide survivors, learning disabled and children and adults of all ages. I volunteered at a school for the handicapped. I also coordinated and ran art programs and class for the City of Ventura, California.
I found myself creating with my students. We were successful because we detached ourselves from any outcome. I created a safe place to come and "play". We produced artwork as an end in itself. The creative process became a means both of reconciling emotional conflicts and of fostering self-awareness and personal growth. I was involved in the process as a facilitator and at the time, was not even aware of the many miracles that transpired. I facilitated creative expression in a non threatening manner. Healing happened, and I saw lives change because of creative expression.
I also found that the art process was beneficial in the classroom. Teachers of my students reported that not only had their grades improved but their behavior as well. As a result of my work at the Hobbit, I went on to obtain my MA in Professional Counseling with advanced graduate studies in Art Therapy. As a therapist, I have noted repeatedly the correlation between children's levels of self esteem and their academic and social progress.
It is the intent of this e-book to provide both educators and parents unique activities, practical ideas, inspiration and techniques for empowerment and confidence building. My mission is to facilitate empowerment through creative expression. I am a firm believer that art in any form is healing and powerful. Many of our children today never realize their potential because they have never been taught to believe in themselves. As educators and parents we have the power to make a difference.
